Korean Air chooses SkyBreathe® 360° eco-flying platform to save fuel and cut the carbon footprint of their flights

Seoul, October 19, 2022 – Korean Air, the flag carrier of Korea, is leveling up its commitment to environmental protection by implementing SkyBreathe® eco-flying software to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce aircraft carbon emissions.

Under this agreement, OpenAirlines will implement SkyBreathe® eco-flying platform, the world’s leading fuel efficiency software. The software will automatically analyze the flight data of the airline’s 155 aircraft daily to improve operational efficiency at the fleet, route, and individual flight stage level.

The Big Data solution integrates multiple data sources for each flight in a single database. It computes achieved and potential savings considering the exact flight conditions, such as weather, flight path, Air Traffic Control, and payload, to produce highly accurate fuel metrics.

It generates insights, which are shared with all stakeholders through synthetic and easy-to-read dashboards. Pilots can visualize their actual flights in 4D and get an individual debrief on each fuel-saving best practice via a dedicated user-friendly mobile app called MyFuelCoach™.

This digital solution will enable Korean Air to quickly implement the most appropriate best practices to reduce fuel consumption. The main operational actors (flight operations engineers, dispatchers, maintenance engineers, etc.) and the pilots become active contributors through an all-in-one platform that empowers them and gives them detailed reports of their performance.

Committed to various means of reducing carbon emissions, we acknowledge flight efficiency optimization as a powerful lever to decarbonization, and we aim to implement a practical plan to achieve concrete CO2 reduction results. SkyBreathe® will help us build the infrastructure to monitor fuel savings systematically and identify potential inefficiencies, ultimately reducing our carbon footprint,” says Soo-Keun, LEE, CSO, Executive Vice President at Korean Air.

“SkyBreathe® usually enables an airline to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from 2 to 5%. We know that it’s one of the airlines’ top priorities since jet fuel cost is rising and now accounts for 35% to 45% of operational expenses. Under the threat of climate change, every airline should have a strong fuel efficiency program involving all departments to develop a safe and efficient fuel and environmental culture. As a pioneer in the global aviation industry, Korean Air is taking preemptive measures to reduce its carbon footprint and mitigate climate change. It will be exciting to help them further reduce fuel costs while contributing to achieving their carbon neutrality goal.” Says Alexandre Feray, CEO and founder of OpenAirlines.
