The Consumer Goods Forum Launches the “Net Zero Playbook for Consumer Industries”, in Collaboration with Accenture

PARIS and SHARM EL-SHEIKH, November 10th, 2022 – The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) has launched the Net Zero Playbook for Consumer Industries in collaboration with its members, Accenture and the Race to Zero. It has been launched at COP27, where a key theme is making good on the commitments made at COP26 and demonstrating action.

The Playbook contains practical solutions to help consumer-facing companies address complex emission challenges and serves as a consumer industry executive’s guide for developing and operationalising decarbonisation roadmaps. It outlines the opportunities that exist for companies as they navigate their path to net zero as well as advice on how to get started. It also provides case studies demonstrating how industry leaders are already taking action across key decarbonisation levers, including sustainable agriculture, plastics and packaging, transport and logistics, consumer use, and supplier enablement.

Nigel Topping, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for the UK, COP26 will introduce the Playbook as part of the Marrakech Partnership’s Industry Action Event on November 11th, 2022 at 10:00 EET.

Nigel Topping, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for the UK, COP26 and Mahmoud Moheildin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt, COP27, said, “The groundswell in climate ambition among non-state actors gives reason for renewed optimism. Today, over 13,000 companies, cities, investors, and others are aligned to credible, science-based Race to Zero targets. However, commitments alone will not bring us to a 1.5°C world, and the increasingly urgent climate crisis has brought us to an inflection point; if we are to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, these commitments must be translated to decisive action on a global scale in this critical decade of delivery. At the same time, there is widespread recognition that, for many non-state actors, the path to net zero — and halving emissions by 2030 — is not clear, particularly within consumer industries. Interventions, solutions, and approaches are often complex, diverse and not easily understood.”

Ignacio Gavilan, Sustainability Director, The Consumer Goods Forum, said, “As a CEO-led organisation — and Accelerator of the Race to Zero — we have focused on helping transition members to net zero by supporting them with specific tools and processes to drive large-scale, cross-sector change, reshaping the way they interact with nature.”

Oliver Wright, senior managing director and global lead for Accenture’s Consumer Goods & Services practice, said, “Even in times of great disruption and uncertainty, the consumer goods industry has proven to be adaptable and resilient. The challenge of managing complex global value chains and raising the bar for sustainability commitments is significant. However, now is the time for action and to make sustainability a force for change. The playbook is another step in sharing knowledge and best practices to help business leaders accelerate their journey to achieving net zero.”
