Plan Ahead for a Safe Halloween

Silva Injury Law Reimbursing for Sober Rides During the Holiday

Turlock, CA [October 26, 2022] — To reduce the risk of DUI/DWI accidents on Halloween this year, Silva Injury Law is putting on a sober ride campaign. The program, which applies to all residents of Turlock, CA, offers a free ride to anyone who plans on drinking during their Halloween celebrations.

Halloween DUI Statistics

When it comes to fatal crashes on Halloween, drunk driving is often to blame. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), around 45% of all deadly accidents during the Halloween holiday involve a drunk driver. In fact, between 2016 and 2020, there were 496 fatal accidents on Halloween across the nation. This means that approximately 223 of these crashes could have been prevented if one or more drunk drivers had decided to take a taxi or rideshare.

Unfortunately, more data suggests that many of these fatalities involve pedestrians, especially children. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that children between the ages of four and eight have a tenfold increase in pedestrian fatality risk on Halloween compared to any regular day. This is based on pedestrian fatality data between 5:00 pm and 11:59 pm on every Halloween between 1975 and 2016. The highest accident risk for children is at around 6:00 pm in residential neighborhoods, presumably due to limited visibility of costumes, unsafe street crossings, and other factors.

However, the statistics don’t stop there. Between 2016 and 2020, the annual number of fatal accidents on Halloween increased by 44%. In addition, California is consistently one of the deadliest states on Halloween night. With 49 fatal accidents over a five-year period, California makes up 10% of all fatal accidents during Halloween. For this reason, it’s important to consider taking a ride with a sober driver if you decide to drink or use controlled substances.
