Going to Sturgis This Summer? Here are Some Tips

Located close to the Michigan-Indiana border is the quaint but unassuming city of Sturgis.

With a population just over 10,000, the largest city in St. Joseph County has plenty of ways to keep you occupied on a weekend break. Outdoorsy travelers will be drawn to the area’s beautiful woods and lakes, which are perfect for exploring and hiking.

Planning to spend a day or two in the Sturgis area? Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your trip.

Stay at the Cade Lake County Park and Campground

Lake Cade offers summer travelers opportunities to go boating or swimming, while those who prefer the shore can explore trails or use the basketball and volleyball courts. This is an incredibly scenic spot, so amateur photographers can probably spend a few hours chasing the perfect nature shot.

The site is suitable for traditional tents as well as RVs, and you get the comfort and convenience of modern amenities like restrooms and showers.

If you have a medical emergency or accident while hiking, boating, or playing, head over to the urgent care clinic located in the central town area for immediate medical attention.

Explore the trails at Timm Preserve

Featuring woods and wetlands with 3 miles of hiking trail, nearby Timm Preserve is a family (and dog) friendly park perfect for a picnic. This is an easy hike for most people, with a well-maintained trail.

In some areas, a boardwalk is installed to make it more accessible. Since this hike is both short and easy, it may not satisfy seasoned hikers. But it’s a great way to stretch your legs and get some exercise nonetheless.

Kayak down the Fawn River

This long river offers a novel way to recharge in an area known for its lakes. You can choose to drift down the river in a canoe, kayak, or small boat to get a closer look at riverside forests and marshes.

You may also enjoy a fishing break as the river is full of largemouth bass and pike fish. The river takes many turns along its meandering path, but the waters are largely calm and tranquil. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

Take in the sights and sounds of the city

Learn about the area’s history at the Sturgis Historical Museum or take in the quaint storefronts of the downtown area. There are gift shops to buy local products and souvenirs, as well as restaurants, bars and taverns for you to sample the local dining scene. Art lovers may want to visit the town’s galleries, where you can check out local artists and buy ceramics, jewelry, and other artisanal products.

Other things to do in Sturgis include golfing, as the area has a few 18-hole courses. These courses also boast facilities for non-golfers, including health clubs, restaurants, and much more.

Sturgis is not quite a big, bustling city, but its proximity to nature, quiet parks, and tranquil lakes makes it a great weekend escape.

Common services provided by urgent care centers include in-person & virtual care for ear infections, cold and flu symptoms, physical examination, and more.
