Apple Boasts Latest iPhones with 5G: Flop or Not?

It’s that time of the year where everyone goes crazy about the newest iPhone release. Apple released iPhone 12 series this year and one of the prominent specifications they introduced is the support for 5G connectivity. This can only mean that these latest smartphones will be able to drastically improve video playbacks, file uploads, and downloads.

This is not new for Android users as it has been with them for a bit while now but Apple promises a whole new level of definition on this matter. On a question of whether it’s worth it to upgrade or not is what we’re going to find out.

With the electronic companies producing gadgets with 5G compatibility, three major wireless data providers have started offering 5G Wireless Service all over the states. The availability isn’t the biggest question, but the performance. Just like any other service, it varies on your carrier and location. Not only that, but it may also vary on the kind of 5G offered to you.

5G isn’t just 5G. There are 3 different kinds of 5G where the speed and performance of your phone will depend on.

Low Band – as the name states, it’s the slowest type of 5G frequency, but it doesn’t mean that it’s “slow” Its performance and speed are almost as equal to how 4G LTE Home Internet is like, and its availability is stretched all over the country including a portion of remote areas. It works well may it be indoors or outdoors.

Mid Band – this frequency offers a higher speed but lesser coverage than the low band. This is more likely to be available in all major metro cities across the country. Just like the low band, it works well for indoor and outdoor use.

High Band – as you can see, the faster it goes, and smaller the coverage it offers. With the high band, you will experience a mind-boggling speed with incredibly low latency, but it’s only constrained to certain areas. It works better outdoors as it can easily be disrupted by walls and other obstructions.

Now, let’s talk availability. Like what was mentioned above, the availability may vary on your location. There are certain kinds of 5G that may or may not be available in your location. Some people have been testing the major carriers’ 5G networks throughout the states. Here’s what they have to say:

T-Mobile is one of the major service providers in the United States. New York City is one of the few cities that supports all types of 5G, thanks to T-Mobile. The high band is also available in a few cities around the US. By far, they provide the greatest 5G network coverage in the country and are still continuing their expansion this 2020. The speed is somehow decent, depending on your location, it may be one of the best 5G network providers you can consider choosing.

Verizon somehow has the least coverage but a lot of people claim that the speed they offer is still unmatchable. One person who was testing it out claimed that it’s extremely fast, no doubt, but if you go a bit far from their transmitter, the speed would be much slower yet still works fine.

AT&T offers more coverage compared to Verizon but most people claim that AT&T tops T-Mobile when it comes to speed. They offer low band service available throughout the country and high band service in 36 cities in the US which is pretty great as these providers are giving people real competition.

The Takeaway

Whether you’re planning to upgrade or buy the latest iPhone because of the 5G it offers, it all depends on your preference and lifestyle. Keep in mind that high band 5G doesn’t work well indoors. But if you’re already decided, you might want to ask your chosen carrier what suits your location best. 5G is still in the works for more improvement, either way, you’ll get what you pay for.
